The Farmland Conservancy is happy to announce the acquisition of a 26.3 acre parcel. The land is the future site of the Joseph Sutherland Farmland and Nature Preserve, made possible through a generous grant from the Niagara River Greenway Commission.
This acquisition is in accordance with the Niagara River Greenway principles of Ecological Integrity and Restoration and Sustainability. It will enable us to restore local biodiversity, preserve natural and cultural heritage of the Town of Niagara and enhance the quality of life in the nearby neighborhoods. Accessibility to scenic nature trails will benefit humans and wildlife. The reforestation of the parcel will improve the aesthetic beauty of the community and will contribute to a healthier environment.
In an effort to form partnerships within the community, the Town of Niagara Farmland Conservancy, held pubic meetings with residents and found them to be unanimously enthusiastic about the plan to preserve the acreage as a green space which will include community based projects: hiking trails and a community garden and a pond are proposed.
